Life in the Foothills

The Foothills Region of Maine is made up of an area of high hills and low river valleys that sit alongside the northernmost section of the Appalachian Mountain Range.
In Somerset County, the Kennebec River tributaries, which run south through the region, is one of the largest in the state.  To the west, where Franklin County lies, the Saddleback and Mount Abraham Mountain Ranges separates the Sandy River Valley from the Dead River, flowing ever southward to the ocean.

This part of the state, I feel, is often overlooked.  Tourists travel through it on their way to bigger and better attractions.  From here, you can travel an hour or two in either direction and be at either a ski resort or a coastal seafood restaurant.  You can travel north to Moosehead Lake or Baxter State Park, or you can go south to Acadia National Park or Portland's Old Port where culture abounds.  But I feel that the heart of Maine is alive and well in this tourist's no-man's land, amplified by the area's lack of foreign cultural attractions.

This blog will focus on area attractions for local individuals and families alike.  It will provide names of places of interest, phone number, directions, cost, and a review of the attraction for the benefit of locals of the Foothills Region of Maine.
